NSW: New laws to record pesticide use

SYDNEY, Dec 17 AAP - Farmers, market gardeners and pest controllers are among NSW occupations
which will need to record pesticide use under new state government regulations.

From July 31 next year, records will need to be kept by people using pesticides commercially
or as part of their job, NSW Environment Protection Authority director general Lisa Corbyn
said today.

The move is designed to improve pesticide management state-wide.

The new regulations follow the finalisation of the Pesticides Amendment (Records) Regulation,
developed in consultation with representatives from key groups.

Public consultation also was carried out earlier this year.

"The majority of the feedback supported record keeping, but raised concerns about recording
so many details," Ms Corbyn said in a statement.

"We took that onboard and simplified the information that users are required to record.

We are confident that the revised requirements will be workable."

Under the new regulations, pesticide users must record who applied the substance, what
and how much was used, and when and where it was applied.

If the application took place outdoors using spray equipment, information about wind
speed and direction must also be recorded.
